Writers get better with practice.

Sometimes it helps a writer to look back at older pieces to see how well he or she has improved.

Sometimes looking at older pieces just makes that writer cringe at their earlier work.

Below is a piece that I cranked out for the Norseman, my high school newspaper.

Fashion Changes for Spring

What do you wear when it's 105 degrees and the humidity is 94%? If you don't know, you better think of something fast. These hot spring and summer months are almost here.

Here's what some students and teachers said when asked, "What do you like to wear in the summer?"

• Mrs. Thornton, senior principal: "What I wear depends on whether I'm working or playing. When I play, I'm wearing blue jeans working jeans so the fire ants don't get me when I'm working in the yard."

• Scott McGee: "Colored plaid shorts are like all the way. They trick everybody out."

• Mrs. Smith, substitute teacher: "Walking shorts and summer tops. Simply elegant summer tops. Just elegant."

• Amy Howell: "In the summer when it's pretty hot, I like to wear baggy walking shorts and loose fitting shirts because they keep you cool."

• Jim Watt: "Shorts with deck shoes and no socks, cut up shirts. They're cool and comfortable to wear around."

• Coach Morton: "Whatever I can get by with. No, I prefer to wear shorts. Cool, comfortable clothes."

• Lewis Neveu: "I like to wear Jams and cut up t-shirts and sandals. It's casual, comfortable and cool."

• Megan Walker: "I like to wear tank tops and no shoes and walking shorts. I look messy but it's a casual state of the year."

• Mrs. Whitley, librarian: "Light clothes and very casual clothes are nice to wear and keep one warm when I'm in an air conditioned building."
